I’ve known Dan since 2021 both as a colleague and a friend. During that time I’ve had the privilege to work and train alongside him, learning all the way. Dan is caring, emotionally intelligent, and invested in the success of others. But when I asked Dan for help training for my first ultra, it wasn’t the aforementioned qualities that made him so effective.
Dan Mazzei possesses a fierce determination to identify the limits of what is physically possible, and he lives there. On the track, his happy go lucky demeanor gives way to a gritty mental toughness that is no doubt the cornerstone of his success in collegiate athletics and the Army’s Ranger School. When I started training for the JFK 50 miler in June of 2024, I had never run more than 18 unbroken miles. I only had five months to prepare, and came to Dan looking for a solution to what seemed like an impossible problem. Dan’s approach was methodical and his training made my efforts more rewarding than any type of training I've followed so far. He's also available almost 24/7, which made things super convienent when life got busy.
I raced the 62nd annual JKF 50 Miler on November 23rd 2024. I came in 102nd overall and 87th among the men with a time of 7 hours and 53 minutes. Thanks to Dan, I shattered my goal of 9 hours and opened the door to a whole new world within endurance sports. Before I trained with coach Mazzei, I was barely running 2 miles. After 2 months of training with him, I dropped 30 seconds off of my mile time and could sustain that for 5 miles comfortably. I would recommend him to anyone who is interested in becoming a better runner.
